The forgotten revenue black hole

The biggest commercial problem in sport isn't a thin pipeline. It's forgetting what you've already sold.

The biggest commercial issue in sport isn't a lack of pipeline. It's forgetting what you've already sold.

  • Missed social posts
  • Unused tickets
  • Forgotten appearances
  • Expired digital rights

None of them feel like a big deal in isolation.

Together, they're often the difference between a renewal and a difficult conversation.

Under-delivery is quiet until it isn't

Nobody raises a flag in November. A post gets bumped for a team-news graphic. An appearance is rearranged and never rebooked. Two hospitality places go unused because nobody chased the RSVP. Each one is a reasonable decision on a busy matchday.

It surfaces in the renewal meeting in May, when the partner runs through everything they didn't get — and you have no record to answer with. At that point the conversation isn't about next season's price. It's about last season's shortfall.

The problem is memory, not effort

This isn't a story about commercial teams not working hard enough. It's about a season's worth of obligations living in a signed PDF, three inboxes and someone's head — while the people who agreed them move on to the next deal.

Spreadsheets don't help as much as they should. They record what was sold, but nobody updates them at 5pm on a Saturday, and they can't tell you what's now at risk. By the time the gap is visible, the season is gone and there's no way to make good on it.

What good looks like

Every contracted right broken out into something countable. Evidence captured as delivery happens, not reconstructed in April. And enough warning — in November, not May — that there's still season left to put it right.

Renewals get a great deal easier when you can show a partner exactly what they received, line by line, before they think to ask.

We're building RightsHub to make it easier for commercial teams to protect this revenue. Can you afford not to ask us how?
